Celebrating a girls’ night in with my daughter a few weekends ago, we curled up in our PJ’s and fuzzy slippers and decided to see what Direct TV had to offer. And there she was, Miss America! My little one was mesmerized by the crowns and gowns the preview displayed. As a former pageant contestant myself, I too was enthralled by the glamour. The nostalgia drifted gently over us, and I remembered being her age pretending it was me on that stage waving and smiling. “What an unexpected blessing this will!” I thought to myself as the emotions of past and present mingled together. Unfortunately my moment of euphoria was short lived as my conservative eyes began to analyze the wardrobe choices and introductory lines for each candidate. The Miss America today was not what I remembered. Grace and poise were replaced with worldliness and sex appeal. Not all the contestants had hemlines and intros that would embarrass their fathers, but the “new” look of womanhood in America disturbed me. Did I really want my daughter to see this?
